Homemade Taco Seasoning

Tacos! It’s not Tuesday, but I’m going with this anyway. Everyone loves tacos, they are delicious and there are so many variations out there! Most of the time if you make tacos at home, chances are you are either buying one of those taco kits or picking up a taco seasoning packet to make them. Let’s fix this!

Those taco packets are an overload of sodium. Everything in that packet you have at home in your cabinet. You can also ease up on all the sodium by making your own. It wouldn’t be tacos without some salt, so yes there is some in here (I use garlic salt), but most of the flavor comes from the other spices.

Forget that little yellow packet and take a peek in your spice cabinet instead!

For this recipe you will need:

  • 1 Tablespoon of chili powder
  • 1/2 Tablespoon of cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon of oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of ground pepper
  • 2 teaspoons of cornstarch

(Makes about 3 1/2 Tablespoons, good for a taco family dinner)

Here’s what I scrounged up out of my spice cabinet!

I put the date on it so I know when I should use it up by. They are spices so they will last, but I like to use at least before 6 months are up!

These mason jars are good for everything!

My entire jar is 440mg of sodium. Again, the WHOLE batch! With the recipe I plan on making with this, it’ll be 8 servings for the jar. That’s only 55mg of sodium for my taco seasoning! Some of those packets have 880mg of sodium PER SERVING! That is crazy! The lowest I was able to come across was 300mg of sodium per serving. Don’t buy these, make mine!  🙂

Do this tonight so you are prepped for my awesome chicken taco salad recipe that is coming tomorrow! 🙂

Happy eating…
