The No Coffee Joke

Yesterday was Monday. Yesterday I had 4 hours of sleep. And yesterday I had NO COFFEE.

No, I am not joking. I did not have one sip of glorious, wonderful, scrumptious coffee. I seriously cannot even remember the last time that happened. Actually no, it was my Sophomore year of college, the DAY BEFORE I tried coffee for the first time. When I first had it, I was in between classes (my english class to be specific), needed a pick me up and said let me try coffee. I always hated the smell so I never cared to try it. I remember that day so clearly because I never turned back. Coffee and Katie, it goes together like Peanut Butter and Jelly.

So why no coffee? Did I run out? Did the hospital run out? Did all coffee beans literally run away from me when I went for them? You would think so because I thought I would never see the day that I didn’t have a cup. I had this brilliant idea to detox. 5 days of cleaning my system a bit to get the ball rolling. The initial thought was 100% clean food, nothing processed, nothing packaged, only water, 3 cups of green tea with fresh mint only, not even stevia! No animal proteins, only proteins from grains, seeds, beans, etc. I was fine all day at work with the food. In fact I was like hey this is nothing, I’m only missing a little chicken. It was the COFFEE that drove me mad.

The morning wasn’t bad at all. I was in the OR until 11am and I was expecting to walk out with the worst migraine ever. Bright lights, shiny retractors (well we didn’t really use any, but shiny instruments), gowned and hot standing in one spot for 3 hours with no coffee in my system, just a 1/2 cup of oats and berries. By this time folks I am on my 4th cup. But I was fine! After I got out I did a couple tasks in the hospital and then had lunch.

detox salad

This is a little detox salad. Spinach, cucumbers, mushrooms, chia seeds, lentils, avocado, with a apple cider/extra virgin olive oil dressing I made. Pretty good! I also had an apple with cinnamon sprinkled on it.

Well an hour passed and I thought oh my gosh I need coffee NOW. I was ready to snap at someone. I couldn’t believe I didn’t have the dreaded no caffeine headache, but my body was just craving that caffeine! Somehow I powered through and made it to 430 without it.

gym pom

I changed for the gym and thought wow I am going to work out without a belly full of the good stuff. I actually felt A LOT less bloated than usual. And my body felt more natural. I am more tired on days I have my coffee than I was yesterday. I still missed my cup of joe though!

My gym session included a light leg day (nothing heavy because I didn’t have my normal food intake) and some cardio. I did 30 minutes on the stairmaster (planned on 15, but I got a second wind and kept going). Here are some of the leg exercises I did:

  • Barbell Squats, 40 lbs, 20 reps x 4 sets
  • Slow dead lifts, 40 lbs, 12 reps x 4 sets
  • Plie squats, 35 lb kettle bell, 20 reps x 3 sets
  • Box step ups, 10 reps x 2 sets unweighted, then 2 sets with 10 lb kettles
  • Stability ball wall squats, 12 reps x 4 sets
  • Stretching

As you see pretty low key on the legs, but the stair master made me sweat like crazy! I went a little faster than normal.

no coffee minnie

Once I got home I needed to refuel my body properly. The detox food is just not made for someone who works out like I do, nor someone with a lot of muscle. My body needs constant fuel to run properly and when I take it away even for a little bit, it screws up my body and my metabolism. So I don’t think I will continue with the bunny food, but let’s see if I can do 5 days without coffee! I give it till 10am Tuesday morning šŸ˜‰ Terrible Tuesday REQUIRES caffeine.

I also made a great hummus for my lunches this week. I didn’t think it would be anything special, but it turned out super yummy so I will post the recipe soon! I used the classic chick peas, but since I tossed my tahini when I moved, I needed to find a substitute. I did just that by using sesame seed oil and sunflower seeds! It worked perfect. Can’t wait to share šŸ™‚

Today I am desperately hoping for a fast day. It’s my least favorite day of the week, but I know at the end of my day and after my gym session I’m going to pick up my little baby girl! Sorry Pop Pop, she needs to come back home where she belongs.

Have a great Tuesday!

no coffee but smiling

    Hey Katie,

Going coffee free is rough, I did 3 x before( 2x when I was pregnant and 1x for a clean diet I was following) and I actually got sick, like withdrawals from a drug sick. Made me wonder if coffee is really good for my body. Anyway, just found out I’m preggers again šŸ™‚ so trying to give it up again (caffeine is not good for the baby). This time I’m weaning myself off I went from two huge 16 oz cups a day to 1 half caf 8 oz cup. Since I did it gradually I didn’t get sick this time, but not wanting to give up that 4 oz in the AM. Lol given the choice between eating or having coffee I would take the cup of joe. I feel your pain, good luck Katie šŸ™‚

You are brave! I know that if I drank coffee everyday, I would be so afraid of getting a caffeine withdrawal headache. I do find it weird that you are less tired, but then again, maybe that’s because you are use to the high (energy) the caffeine gives? I hope today goes well and you can continue without the coffee šŸ™‚
